Important Fire Safety Updates and Legislative Changes for Thorne Residents

With the recent legislation introduced by our provincial government, additional support from the municipal council and ratepayers will be essential to ensure that we meet these new requirements.

Fire Safety Guidelines: Open fires are prohibited, except when contained within a unit equipped with a protective screen. If firefighters are called to your residence due to an open fire, the taxpayer will be liable for a fine to cover the fire department's response costs.

Emergency Response: In the event of a fire, using 911 is the most effective way to guarantee a quick and efficient response. Please stay vigilant and ensure that all civic number signs on your property are clearly visible at all times to help emergency services locate you without delay.

Smoke Detector Safety: Install smoke detectors on every floor of your home or cottage and remember to replace the batteries twice a year. We recommend doing so when the clocks change in the spring and fall. The small cost of a battery is nothing compared to the safety of your loved ones.

Smoke Detector Inspections: All smoke detector inspections were completed in 2024. The next round of inspections will take place in 2029. If you would like an inspection before then, please contact the municipal office to schedule one. For optimal safety, it’s recommended that smoke detectors be replaced every 10 years.
